Golden Rules for Recall!

Can you let your dog off lead? Do they have to say hello to everyone new dog they meet? Do they have a high prey drive? Recall, this can be one that proves tricky for some partnerships. It's important for safety, and interestingly the training can be underrated. In this months blog I will let you into my Golden Rules for Recall to set you and your furry friend on the path to recall success and walking freedom.

Golden Rules for Recall!!

Recall can be a hard one to crack, so here are my top tips to get it successful:

  • We have to be the best thing in the environment

  • Always be fun and exciting

  • Always make it positive (don't scold them if they've taken ages , this means it's been harder to come back)

  • Be consistent in you cue

  • Practice - regular successful runs

  • Set yourself up for success - distance from stimuli (dogs/prey/people)

  • Proactive management - use a long line to prevent unwanted unsuccessful attempts - these are great!

  • Build difficulty gradually - around distractions, distance - just because they know how to do it in the garden or an empty field doesn't mean they know how to do it when there's deer/dogs around

  • Don't be cheap! - pay highly - games, hight value toy, high value food

  • Be annimated - rabbits are more exciting than us stood still

  • Don't make the lead going on equal fun stops - they may not want to go back on

Path To Success

By building difficult and skill level grdually, always paying well, setting yourself up for success you can build the understanding that coming back to you in a wide variety of situations is worth while for your furry friend.

If you are wanting an extra bit pa-zaz then why not introduce a whiste for an extra special recall. Use the ultimate reward possible, always vary it and this can be the crem-de-le-crem of recalls.
